Walking to Health and Happiness

Walking, we almost all do it without thinking a number of times every day and it is one of the finest paths to keep you healthy, if you do it regularly enough - something many people DON’T do! If just improving your basic health & fitness is your aim, forget all of the funny and expensive diets, forget the boot camps and private trainers and just use those wonderful Free tools - your legs, more often.

A 2009 research study of sedentary women revealed that even a relatively low level of exercise - around 75 mins per week - improved their fitness levels markedly, when compared to a group that remained inactive.

Walking is low impact so there’s limited possibility of injury, even if you are old, large or haven’t exercised for some time and in contrast to general belief is just as profitable as running the same distance, it just takes you longer! It needs minimal appliances, can be done at any time of night or day, at your own pace and and you can do it virtually anywhere.

The best way to check this is to purchase a pedometer, probably the sole extra thing you may have to buy. A pedometer will measure each step you’re taking during any particular time frame you set and they can mostly just be put in your pocket or purse and forgotten till you need to check your progress.

Moderate exercise such as walking presents little health risk but, if you’ve got an existing medical problem or have any concerns ask your physician before you start any new exercise plan, they ought to be only too happy to help, after all the healthier you are, the less of their time you might take up in the future.

Attempt to build activity into your daily life. These days it is so straightforward to just jump in your car for even the shortest journey, try to break the habit, both from home and work. If you have a dog, make it’s day and take it for an additional walk or a longer walk each day - if you don’t, I bet you have got a neighbor that’s only to pleased for you to exercise their dog! No automobile and you use public transport? Simply get off a stop earlier than normal and walk the remainder of the way.

Even housework can help towards your goal…. Think how many steps you’re taking when you vacuum the house. The probabilities are limitless and as we revealed before, get a simple pedometer to check your progress, you will be amazed at how far you can go each day.

Get yourself into a walking routine and put it into practise as regularly as possible, for instance, walk at the same time each day, you use the same quantity of energy whatever the time of day you walk so make it at a convenient time for you, but remember it should be a routine, NOT a bore.

Keeping a diary or log of your exercise can also help you to get into your routine and monitor your progress. you may quickly find your body becomes acclimatized to physical exercise, so start to enhance your power when you’re able to and so improve your fitness levels. You can simply increase the intensity of your walks by changing your road to include walking up hills, take a set of light hand weights with you on your walks, increase your walking speed over time and include some quicker walking spurts and walk for longer.

To sum up, remember we all have busy lives and you might think you can’t find time to walk for 30 minutes a day? Try having a look at it from another angle, the more healthy and fitter you get, the chances are the longer you’ll have to do all of the other stuff you love doing - for the rest of your longer life.

The Future of Ice Hockey Shafts

The ice hockey shafts found throughout the United States have been tremendously changed for it to be more effective in tournaments and competitions. The development of this equipment has been constantly pushed through, especially in the National Hockey League Association where the level of competition requires the players to be always on top of their game.

Many of the latest ice hockey shafts features are new technological breakthroughs that have been tested by professional players and teams coming from the National Hockey League. Compared to the previous ice hockey shafts decades ago, the ones used today have been drastically transformed to a more accurate, stronger and lighter sports accessory.

The progression in the technology of the new ice hockey shafts is developed in reputable sports laboratories that conduct constant research and evaluation with regards to its improvement. Many teams from the NHL sponsor the research process for them to gain the advantage with regards to the tools they are using.

The ice hockey shaft is also modified to have fast swing capabilities through an aerodynamic design. This would increase the speed of the puck when hit, which gives the player better chances to score. This is ideal for players who shoot from a long distance since the velocity required would be great.

The ice hockey shaft is also configured based on an aerodynamic design which has a lot of benefits. It allowed users and hockey players to swing more rapidly since the aerodynamic design uses the light weight characteristic of the shaft to its own advantage. Through this, the stick’s velocity is doubled.

Another improvement made into the ice hockey shaft is the addition of angle correctors in the handles. This is to help the hockey players know the right angle whenever they position the ice hockey shaft in reference to the ground. This is very important considering the fact that the strength of the swing would depend on the position of the hockey stick.

The problem of long distance shots is another issue which has plagued hundreds of players in the national hockey league. Most players miss since they either overpower or lack the required swing velocity to hit the puck. That is why the new ice hockey shaft has been established with a power lever which actually stops the shaft from swinging out of control. It can be found at the tip of the shaft.

The latest ice hockey shaft used in the sport of hockey has certainly made the playing mechanics easier and much more accessible for players. Many players have won due to the inch difference of accuracy and precision that was attributed by the new ice hockey shaft.

Get that Goal with Top Hockey Sticks

Ice hockey is a thrilling sport to watch and it is even more fun to play. It has speed, grace, team play, and toughness all rolled into one. Once you start playing you will probably find it addictive and hard to stop playing.

If you want to learn to play hockey, one of the first things to look into is getting your own hockey stick. Hockey sticks are not that hard to find in stores but it can be a challenge to find the one best suited for you. When buying your very first hockey stick, it is a good idea to learn about how they are made and the features that go into making one that matches your style of play.

Besides your skates, a hockey stick is the most important tool that you have. Learning how to use it effectively will take some time to master but it will make playing a lot more fun as well. The materials that the stocks are made from will have an impact on how it feels and how it performs for you.

The traditional material used to make hockey sticks has been wood. There have been advances in how the wood was used (example: lamination) but the modern wood ones are similar to ones made 20-4 years ago. The recent advances in materials have come from composite materials. These are usually a combination of carbon fiber and other materials. These composite stick are lighter and allow for precise design and manufacture to optimize some of the playing characteristics.

If you are looking for the cheapest prices for hockey sticks, wood is always the best material to use. Although these types of sticks may have the most affordable rates, quality hockey sticks always have the sturdiest material. Sticks made of graphite always have the most durable material, as compared to those made of wood. Wooden sticks are flexible and can be relatively sturdy as well. However, through time, sticks made of wood can become weaker and may be prone to breaking.

Essentially, hockey sticks are made with the shaft and the blade. These two are the main parts of a hockey stick. The shaft represents the hockey stick’s longest division that a player holds onto while swaying the puck. At the end of the shaft is a knob that serves as a security gear while playing. This prevents the player’s hand from being injured while holding on to the end of the shaft. The blade, on the other hand, is the end of the hickey stick. This usually has a length of twelve inches and a width of two to three inches.

It is advisable for any buyer not to rush into buying their first hockey stick. You may take all the time you need browsing through the store. Feel free to hold each hockey stick and test them for their comfort and flexibility. For the best hockey sticks, you might want to try those with detachable blade and shaft.

Malibu Pilates Chair Guide

If you are looking around for a great piece of exercise equipment, consider the Malibu Pilates Chair. Like most machines of this type, the MPC is getting major attention from the lose weight crowd. And there is a good reason for this. Technology like this isn’t just about your life easier, it’s about getting things done well. If you are concerned about weight loss, or even just staying in shape, you are going to need the correct strategy for doing so. You need to learn to work smarter, not just harder.

Compared to the Pilates Reformer, which really is the top of the pile of quality exercise equipment, the Malibu Pilates Chair is much smaller and easy to manage. You’ll find it so lightweight that moving it out of the way is a snap. Like the PR it has no problem giving you a full body work out. But what it won’t do is cost you an arm and a leg. At just under $350, it is very cost effective. The Reformer is more in the two to three thousand dollar range.

The MPC is a great starting point for your entry into the world of Pilates exercise. While a rank beginner may want to start slow, you can quickly get up to speed with this machine. It is compact and is easily stored if you need to get it out of the way in a hurry.

The thing about using a device like the Malibu chair is that you are the one doing the work that the chair makes so easy for you. It’s designed to offer you ease of use and before long you will see the pounds of fat literally melting off your body before your very eyes.

I still remember my fat guy days. These Pilates machines were not so readily available to the common person. I had to spend hour upon grueling hour in the health club with all the gym rats and muscle heads. If I had one of these babies I could have been able to lose 20 pounds in 30 days…no problem.

So as not to sounds too rosy about it let me just say that it does have minor drawbacks. Even though it comes with a 20 minute workout on the free DVD (I prefer the Total Dream Body Sculpting workout for a full hour, but that’s just me. It’s also included on the DVD), and a free wall chart and custom diet plan. It doesn’t offer the complete range of motion that a studio model offers. But hey, that’s why the price is so low.

Getting Started With Ice Hockey Equipment

Thinking about starting to play ice hockey? Well there is a large amount of equipment that you need to play hockey so start collecting it now. This article will give you a good list of the most important hockey items that you will need.

The first and most important items you need are your hockey skates. Without good skates you will have a harder time skating and your feet might not be as comfortable. If you new to hockey you need to know that there are big differences between figure skates and hockey skate so be sure to get the right one. If you live in the United States, you will also need to get acquainted with a different shoe sizing system. A size 9 street shoe doesn’t translate to a size 9 hockey skate.

Hockey isn’t hockey without a hockey stick. Ice hockey sticks come in a very large range of choices. Start off with a wood hockey stick and a relatively mild curve on the blade. You don’t want a big curve on your blade when you are first starting out because it makes receiving a pass backhanded very difficult and you won’t learn the proper shooting techniques. For stick number one it is all about getting a basic model and then growing your skills before choosing your second stick.

Flying pucks hurt if they hit you where you don’t have protection. Falling on the ice also hurts when you land on it. This is why the protective hockey gear is so important. You will need a hockey helmet, should pads, elbow pads, hockey pants and shin guards to protect most of your body. Throw in a good pair of hockey gloves and a hockey jill or jock and you will be good to go for protective gear.

You will need a few undergarments such as skate socks and an undershirt (a t-shirt will work fine). Thinner is better on the skate socks. For other clothing you will need a pair of hockey jerseys, a white one and a dark one, and hockey sock for the outside of your shin guards.

Other miscellaneous hockey gear includes items like stick tape, shin guard tape, a mouth guard, some hockey pucks and a hockey bag the size that is large enough to hold all of your gear. A hockey bag with wheels might be a good idea if all of the gear is on the heavy side for you to carry.

Once you have all of your gear and you start using it you will soon realize that it gets wet and smelly very quickly. Best practice for keeping your gear clean is to take it out of your hockey bag and air dry it after every game. Many rinks also have special hockey gear washing machines. Use them! If you don’t take proper care of your gear it becomes a breeding ground for germs and bacterial. Get into the habit of good gear maintenance right from the beginning and you won’t have to fight bigger problems down the road.

As you can see, there is a large number of items that are required to play ice hockey. Most of these items are for your protection. Don’t skip wearing any of them, especially when you are first starting out and playing with other brand new hockey players. The other very important thing to do is to get equipment that fits properly. If you have any doubts ask the folks at your local hockey shop and they will get you set up properly. Good gear will keep you safe and in the game for a long time to come.

A Comparison of Treadmills and Elliptical Machines

Elliptical machines are slowly taking the place of the treadmill. These machines provide a person with a complete cardiovascular workout. They are sold in all different price ranges; some are as low as 400 dollars and some as high as 4 thousand.

The elliptical machine is a combination of skiing, walking, and bicycling. These machines typically have devices in them that will show a person their heart rate while exercising. Some elliptical machines provide a person with the calories they have burned as well.

The best factor about an elliptical machine versus a treadmill is that they do not put pressure on the joints while exercising. When a person walks or runs it is constant pressure on the ankles and feet. With an elliptical machine this impact on the feet does not exist.

Another great aspect of the elliptical machine is that elderly people or people who have been injured can use them. People who have had ankle injuries may find it difficult to walk or run on a treadmill because of the pressure that is puts on their feet. They will not feel this pressure when using the elliptical machine, because it is not there.

Seniors may find it difficult to walk on the treadmill due to a fear of falling. On an elliptical machine their feet are set in place and falling in unlikely. Ellipticals also have a multitude or programs a person can choose from.

Some ellipticals have up to 20 programs to choose from, these are usually the more expensive ones; the cheaper ones have fewer than 10 programs. Elliptical machines have resistance levels that can be changed; this way more than one person can use the same elliptical machine. Ellipticals provide a person a more better workout then a treadmill, because they workout more muscles.

The word elliptical means oval, this is due to the motion that the legs form when using the machine. The bigger the strides, the more room a person will have to move around when using the machine. Most elliptical machines normally are designed with 10 to 20 inch strides.

Elliptical machines come in many different forms. Some can fold up to give ma person more space, but most should be put together in the spot, which they are supposed to stay. When a person purchases an elliptical machine, they should ask themselves three questions, will it fit my budget, my house, and me?

Elliptical machines can be found in most gyms nowadays and are being used frequently by gym guest. They focus more on cardio and can help a person shed the pounds off by burning fat without building too much muscle. Ellipticals can be programmed to help build muscle if that is what the person wishes.

Another great factor about elliptical machines is that they can run without the use of electricity. A person will not be able to see their heart rate, or the calories burned, but they could still use the machine and get a workout. A treadmill will only work if there is electricity running through it.

Ellipticals provide a better workout then treadmills. They do not need to be powered in order to use them, and they do not affect the joints of the feet like treadmills do. All in all they better in many different ways than the treadmill.

A history of Nike

How did a small time importer of Japanese shoes in the early sixties become one of the largest sportswear manufacturers in the world? Its and interesting story as it comes from some very humble beginnings. It all started with a Graduate of business studies called Philip H. Knight who had some big ambitions. Even if he wasnt initially a designer his business know how later proved to be the making of the biggest sportswear company in the world.

Even though Philip was not an engineer he knew that this new technology from Japan could be a big hit with the many athletes and sportsmen whom he knew back in the states. A keen runner himself he was able to recognise the possibilities of these new shoes and decided to become an importer and ordered his first 200 pairs as soon as he got home.

This young graduate made money by selling his new Japanese Sneakers at athletics events. The shoes sold well but he still had to store them in his parents basement. However he still wasnt actually making any sneakers until his old track coach William Bowerman joined the company in 1964. Bowerman was a keen engineer and not just a runner and these skills would revolutionise the sportswear market.

William was a keep sportsman just like Philip however he was also an engineer and was keen to come up with new ways of designing shoes. In one experiment he used rubber and fed it into his wifes waffle iron to create the sole. He was so excited about his new creation he called it the waffle sole.

The Waffle Sole really took off in the 70s with the 1972 Olympic Games. The shoe proved to be a revelation with many sportsmen and women. Especially distance runners who said that the sneaker was much more comfortable than its rivals after long runs.

The famous swoosh logo of Nike was actually developed by a part time design student on placement at the company. She was called Carolyn Davidson and only received around thirty dollars for her work at the time. The symbol has become one of the most recognisable brands in the world and is used on all Nike products.

The 1970s was one of the most exciting time for sneaker design as Nike unveiled the Air Sole. It was designed by a Jet engineer more used to wing design but this give him a crucial understanding of how air flow worked. It allowed him to design a bubble of air in the heel of the shoe that provided comfort and bounce like no other pair of sneakers. The Air sole has proved incredibly popular both from a design and a functionality point of view. It is still seen in many of Nikes Sneakers today such as the Nike Shox and Nike Air 95 which after 15 years is still selling very well. Nike has also reduced the production cost for the air sole making it much cheaper to manufacture.

Nike have also proved adept at marketing in recruiting Michael Johnson in the late 80s to help promote the Sneakers. To further the marketing campaign they decided to make a pair of shoes just for him called the Air Jordans. They proved to be a real hit with kids and adults alike both on and off the court. They were also the number one Christmas present for kids in 1988.

Even though Michael was punished by the NBA every time the strategy actually worked in Nikes favour. Since it was a frequent topic of the many matches Jordan played with people counting how much Jordan was paying to wear the sneakers across the season. This led to the Air Jordan becoming the No1 Christmas present of 1988. Even though they were not cheap kids everywhere wanted to get their hands on them.

During the 90s Nike only went from strength to strength in the sportswear market and unveiled their Just do it catchphrase and they have been doing precisely that every since.
